August Is “Do Something Deliberate” Month

“The Power of a Pause”

Jordan sat on his porch one August morning, cradling a cup of hot tea and watching the world move without him. For once, he wasn’t rushing. No buzzing phone, no multitasking, no checking off boxes.

“Why are you just sitting there like a statue?” his younger cousin, Ava, asked as she bounced out the door with her gym bag.

“I’m being deliberate,” he said calmly.

“Is that code for being lazy?” she teased.

He chuckled. “Nope. Deliberate means doing something on purpose—with intention, thought, and focus. It’s the opposite of rushing or running on autopilot.”

Ava paused on the steps. “So… drinking tea is an event now?”

Jordan smiled. “When you do it deliberately, yes. I’m choosing to slow down, to savor this moment. You’d be surprised what happens when you start living with intention.”

“Huh,” Ava said, clearly intrigued. “So what else do you do deliberately?”

What Does “Deliberate” Mean?

Deliberate means to do something on purpose, with careful thought, awareness, and intention—rather than by accident or habit. When you’re deliberate, you’re not rushing through life; you’re choosing your actions with meaning.

7 Things to Do Deliberately This August

1. Start your day with intention.

Before grabbing your phone, sit quietly and set a goal for the day—something that matters to you.

2. Eat a meal without distractions.

No TV. No scrolling. Just taste, chew, and enjoy every bite.

3. Say “thank you” and mean it.

Write a note or call someone to express gratitude from the heart.

4. Take a mindful walk.

Feel the ground beneath your feet. Notice the colors of the trees. Breathe deeply.

5. Listen more than you talk.

During conversations, focus fully on what the other person is saying instead of planning your reply.

6. Declutter one area of your life.

Pick one drawer, one inbox, or one habit to clean out—intentionally.

7. Create something from scratch.

Cook. Write. Draw. Build. Do it not for perfection, but for purposeful joy.

Benefits of Doing Things Deliberately

• Increased Self-Awareness

You begin to notice your choices—and how they affect your mood, energy, and goals.

• Stronger Relationships

Being intentional with your words and time builds trust and connection.

• Sharper Focus

Deliberate action clears mental clutter and reduces distractions.

• Reduced Stress

You feel more grounded and less scattered when you slow down and choose wisely.

• Greater Satisfaction

When you live on purpose, your days feel more meaningful—because they are.

Back on the porch…

“So,” Ava said, sitting beside Jordan with her gym bag still slung over her shoulder, “how do I start being deliberate?”

He handed her his extra cup of tea and smiled. “Start by sipping this slowly. One breath, one choice at a time.”
