June: Do Something Comforting Month

We need to do something comforting—especially during Do Something Comforting Month—because comfort is a quiet but powerful act of healing. In a world that often feels rushed, unpredictable, and burdened by stress, loss, and uncertainty, simple acts of comfort remind us that we’re not alone. Whether it’s a soft word, a thoughtful gesture, or just sitting in silence with someone who’s hurting, comfort creates space for connection, restoration, and hope.

Why we need comforting—now more than ever:

• Life can be overwhelming. Whether someone is struggling with grief, illness, loneliness, or anxiety, comforting gestures offer emotional relief and strength to carry on.

• Comfort fosters connection. When we take time to comfort others, we strengthen bonds and build communities of empathy and support.

• It reminds people they matter. In times of hardship, even small acts—a cup of tea, a listening ear, a shared moment—can affirm a person’s value and dignity.

• It’s healing for the giver too. Offering comfort doesn’t just help others—it nourishes our own hearts, reminding us of our purpose, our compassion, and our shared humanity.

In short, doing something comforting is a gentle way of saying, “You are not alone,” and sometimes, that message is more powerful than anything else we could say or do.

This June let’s be intentional about being the reason someone feels a little lighter, a little stronger, and a little more seen.

Be Like Malcolm-–The Cat Who Comforts

It has been that kind of year—the kind where the weight of the world doesn’t just sit on your shoulders, it settles into your spirit.

Everywhere you turn, there’s another story. Another loss.

Another family grieving someone they didn’t expect to lose so soon. A friend quietly battling a diagnosis they never saw coming. A neighbor packing up after losing a job that once felt secure. Conversations that used to begin with “How are you?” now pause… because people aren’t quite sure they want to tell the truth.

The economy has stretched households thin. Decisions that used to be simple—groceries, gas, medicine—now carry a quiet tension. There’s a heaviness in the air, the kind you can’t always explain but you can feel in the silence between words.

And then there’s the noise of the world—wars that seem distant but somehow personal, lives disrupted across oceans, images that remind us how fragile peace really is. Closer to home, senseless violence, broken families, young lives cut short. It leaves you asking questions with no easy answers.

People are hurting.

Not always loudly.

Not always visibly.

But deeply.

And in moments like this, you begin to realize something simple and profound:

People don’t just need solutions… they need comfort.

That afternoon, I sat quietly, trying to gather my thoughts, feeling that same weight pressing in. Not overwhelmed, but certainly aware—aware that so many were carrying burdens far heavier than my own.

And then, without announcement—as is his way—he arrived.

Malcolm. The kitten who became King.

He didn’t rush. Kings don’t rush. He moved with quiet authority, tail raised, eyes steady, as if he already understood what I was still trying to process.

He came close… closer… then gently pressed himself against my leg.

No words.

No grand gestures.

Just presence.

I reached down, almost instinctively, and began to stroke his back. He lingered there, not moving away, not demanding—just… staying.

And something about that simple act shifted the moment.

Malcolm eventually made his way into my lap, circling once before settling in like he belonged there—which, of course, in his mind, he did.

He looked up briefly, as if to check on me, then relaxed.

No speech.

No lecture.

Just a quiet understanding that said, “I’m here.”

And in that stillness, it became clear.

Comfort doesn’t always come through big solutions or perfect words. Sometimes it comes through nearness. Through noticing. Through refusing to stay distant when someone is quietly struggling.

Malcolm has never read a book on caregiving. He hasn’t studied human behavior or emotional intelligence. Yet somehow, he knows.

He senses.

He shows up.

Relentlessly.

If only we could be like Malcolm—the kitten who became King—not ruling with power, but with presence.

Sensing when someone nearby is carrying more than they can say.

And instead of waiting… or wondering… or worrying about what to do—

Simply stepping closer. Sitting beside them. And offering the kind of comfort that says, without words:

You don’t have to carry this alone.

— R. Lee Moore, Sr.

Here are 7 meaningful ways you can Do Something Comforting this June:

1. Write a heartfelt note or card.

A few thoughtful words can uplift someone who feels forgotten or discouraged.

2. Offer a warm hug or gentle touch (with permission).

Physical comfort, like a hug or holding a hand, can be deeply reassuring.

3. Listen without interrupting or judging.

Sometimes the most comforting thing is simply to be heard and understood.

4. Cook or deliver a meal to someone in need.

A warm, homemade meal can feed both the body and the soul.

5. Sit with someone in silence.

Just being there—without needing to fix anything—can bring peace and strength.

6. Send a small gift or care package.

A book, candle, tea, or their favorite treat can show you care in a tangible way.

7. Speak words of affirmation.

Let someone know they are loved, appreciated, and not alone.

Comfort doesn’t have to be grand—it just needs to be genuine. Small acts done with great kindness can ease someone’s burden more than we know.
