November: Do Something Kind Month
Short Story: “The Extra Cookie”
It was the first chilly Monday in November when Jamal noticed the girl in the blue hoodie sitting alone again at lunch. She was always quiet. Always reading. And always eating the same sandwich, no drink, no dessert.
“Her name’s Marley,” his friend Tasha whispered. “She’s new.”
Jamal shrugged. “Okay.”
But something stuck with him. That afternoon, when he got home, he opened the cookie tin his grandma always kept full and picked out the biggest one—still warm from the oven.
“Who’s that for?” Grandma asked.
“A girl at school. Just want to be nice,” he said, sliding it into a napkin.
Grandma smiled. “That’s real kindness—not flashy, just thoughtful.”
The next day, Jamal walked up to Marley’s table and gently placed the cookie beside her tray. She looked up, startled.
“You dropped something sweet,” he said with a grin, then walked away.
Marley didn’t say anything, but the next day, she brought an extra book to school—Tollbooth, by R. Lee Moore, Sr.—and quietly slid it across the table toward Jamal.
He smiled. She smiled. And just like that, something kind turned into something beautiful.
What Does “Kind” Mean?
To be kind means to show care, compassion, and consideration for others—through words, actions, or simple gestures. Kindness is about being generous with your time, your attention, and your heart, even when there’s nothing in it for you.
7 Kind Things to Do This November
1. Compliment someone sincerely.
Tell someone you appreciate their smile, their effort, or just who they are.
2. Share something—food, time, or a good book.
Giving is one of the easiest ways to show kindness.
3. Write a thank-you note.
Send one to a teacher, elder, or friend who’s made a difference.
4. Check in on someone who might be lonely.
Call, text, or visit someone who needs a little extra love.
5. Donate warm clothing.
Give gently used coats, gloves, or socks to those in need as the cold sets in.
6. Leave a kind message somewhere public.
A sticky note on a mirror or a chalk message on the sidewalk can brighten anyone’s day.
7. Help without being asked.
Hold the door, clean up after others, or offer to help someone carry groceries.

Just one cookie…
At the end of the month, Jamal told his grandma, “It was just one cookie, but it made a difference.”
She winked. “That’s the magic of kindness, baby—it doesn’t have to be big to be real.”
